Hiking in Brasov: Best Trails for All Levels of Hikers

If you’re a traveler who likes spending mornings on the trail and evenings in a lively city center, Brasov is impossible to beat.

The city sits at the base of the Carpathian Mountains, with Mount Tampa rising directly above the historic center. Because of its location, some of the best hikes in Romania are within easy reach. A couple trails actually begin right from town, with others are a very short drive away, including several excellent day hikes and national parks without an hour drive.

I spent four full days in Brasov during my 15-day excursion to Romania, and while I didn’t spend all four days hiking, I was able to tick a few off my list. With that said, here are some of the best hikes in and around Brasov.

Seven Ladders Canyon

Seven Ladders Canyon Brasov

Located about 20 minutes from the city center, this trail takes you through a narrow canyon filled with waterfalls, wooden walkways, and the seven metal ladders that give the attraction its name.

The ladders sound more intimidating than they actually are. During my hike, there were plenty of families and young kids completing the route without issues. If you’re reasonably comfortable with heights and enjoy a little adventure you won’t have any trouble.

There is a small entrance fee of $5 USD per person. The trail opens at 10:00 a.m. and arriving early is a good idea, especially during summer weekends when crowds build quickly.

The best way to get to Seven Ladders Canyon is to call an Uber, which will cost $10-12 USD each way.

Distance: 4.8 miles
Time: 2.5 to 3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Piatra Mare

The trailhead for Piatra Mare begins in the same area as Seven Ladders Canyon, but this is a full day hike.

For the first section of the hike, you’ll follow the canyon route and pass the waterfalls before branching off toward the summit of Piatra Mare. Once the canyon portion ends, the trail becomes significantly steeper, though it’s still not terribly difficult.

The climb gains roughly 3,000 feet in elevation and continues through dense forest before opening up to wide mountain views.

While much more demanding than Seven Ladders Canyon, this hike is actually manageable for anyone with decent fitness. Just be prepared to dedicate most of your day to it.

Distance: 10 miles
Time: Around 7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Piatra Craiului National Park

For experienced hikers, a trip to Piatra Craiului National Park is well worth the effort. The park is about 90 minutes from Brasov and contains some of Romania’s most impressive mountain scenery. Many of the routes involve steep climbs and high ridgelines, making this a better fit for prospective campers and adventurous folks.

There are dozens of trails to choose from depending on your fitness level and available time. You can plan your own route, or if you don’t want to worry about transportation and/or overnight lodging if doing a multi-day hike, you can do a guided hike with a tour operator based in Brasov.

If hiking is one of the main reasons you’re visiting Transylvania, you should definitely look into the hikes within Piatra Craiului.

Mount Tampa Hike

Mount Tampa Hike Brasov

The hike to the famous “Brasov” sign atop Mount Tampa is the city’s most popular trail. Because the route starts right from town in Parc sub Tampa, you’ll see a mix of tourists and locals using it throughout the day. It has become one of the signature outdoor activities in Brasov.

Although it’s often described as an easy walk, I found it more challenging than many people expect. The trail climbs steadily and gains elevation quickly in a relatively short distance, though it’s by no means dangerous or too steep. It’s also well-trodden and therefore well-paved.

You don’t need any technical experience, but you’ll definitely get your heart rate up, and the payoff is one of the best views in the city, with the entire Old Town and distant countryside in view.

Distance: 3 miles
Time: 2 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Poiana Brasov to Cabana Postavaru

Poiana Brasov is only about 25 minutes from the city center, making it one of the most convenient hiking areas near Brasov. It’s best known as the regional ski resort, but it’s equally popular during the warmer months when it becomes a hub for outdoors activities. Several trails begin in the area surrounding the resorts and apartments at the base of the mountain, including the route to Cabana Postavaru.

This hike is relatively short but still gets you a solid workout. It works well if you only have a few hours available and don’t want to commit to an all-day trek.

One thing worth mentioning is wildlife. It’s not uncommon to come across brown bears in these parts, so it’s smart to stay aware of your surroundings. That goes for hiking throughout all of Romania, which actually has the highest brown bear population across Europe.

Distance: 2.5 miles
Time: 1.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Solomon’s Rocks (Pietrele lui Solomon)

If you want a hike that’s easy to reach from Brasov without needing transportation aside from an Uber, Solomon’s Rocks is a great option. Located on the southwestern edge of the city, this spot is popular with locals looking to escape into nature without committing to a full day in the mountains. The trail begins near a unique rock formation and follows forest paths into the foothills surrounding Brasov.

There are several route variations depending on how far you want to go. You can simply take a short stroll through the valley and return or continue toward Poiana Brasov and connect with longer trails leading into the mountains.

If you’re staying in Brasov and only have a couple of hours free, this is one of the easiest nature escapes near the city, similar to Seven Ladders Canyon.

Distance: 3-5 miles (depending on route)
Time: 1.5-3 hours
Difficulty: Easy

Hiking in Sinaia

Sinaia Hiking Romania

Sinaia is one of the most popular day trips from Brasov. The town sits in a beautiful mountain setting and is home to Peles Castle, one of Romania’s most beautiful castles. Because of this, Sinaia attracts a steady flow of visitors throughout the summer.

Fortunately, most tourists stick to the castle and town center. Once you get onto the trails, things tend to feel much quieter (unless you’re hiking on a weekend).

There are hiking options for nearly every skill level around Sinaia, from shorter walks to numerous challenging mountain routes that can fill an entire day or even multiple days.

While driving to Sinaia from Brasov or Bucharest is possible, traffic on the lone road to get there is often heavy. The train is usually the better choice. It takes about 45 minutes, runs frequently, and offers some nice scenery along the way.

Once you arrive, it’s easy to walk or grab a quick taxi to your preferred trailhead.

Caraiman Peak from Busteni

Caraiman Peak Busteni Romania Hike

Busteni sits between Brasov and Bucharest and is another excellent destination for hikers.

Like Sinaia, it can be reached easily by train from Brasov in 35-40 minutes as it’s the stop before Sinaia.

The area is surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, with Caraiman Peak standing out as one of the most recognizable summits. Many visitors take the cable car to Cabana Babele and start hiking from there. If you choose to begin in town instead, prepare for a demanding day on the trail. The elevation gain approaches 5,000 feet, making this one of the most physically challenging hikes around Brasov.

But for experienced hikers, the views are 100% worth the effort.

Distance: 8 miles
Time: 5 to 6 hours
Difficulty: Difficult

White Tower (Turnul Alb)

Brasov Romania Turnul Alb Tower White

This is more of a scenic walk than a true hike, but it’s still worth noting.

The short trail starts in Old Town Brasov takes you up a series of stairs to Brasov’s White Tower (Turnul Alb) and Black Tower (Turnul Negru), two historic lookout points overlooking the city. If you’ve seen a picture of Brasov with Mount Tampa in the backdrop, it was likely taken from Turnul Alb. So if you’re looking for a spot to get the lead photo for your IG post, this is the spot.

Once you’re at the top, short paths connect the two small towers, and it only takes a few minutes to walk between them. So you might as well visit both. The walk itself isn’t memorable. But the views are! Looking over the red rooftops of Brasov with Mount Tampa rising in the background is one of the best city panoramas you’ll find anywhere in Romania.

Distance: 0.1 miles
Time: 10 minutes
Difficulty: Very Easy

Brasov Hiking Tours

I explored all of these trails independently, but guided hikes are easy to arrange if you prefer having a local expert.

Several tour companies in Brasov offer everything from half-day excursions to full mountain adventures. This can be especially helpful if you’re planning to hike in more remote areas or want transportation included. Several Brasov hiking tour companies conveniently operate out of Poiana Brasov, but guides can meet you anywhere.

During my time in Romania, I joined several guided tours unrelated to hiking and was consistently impressed by how professional and organized they were. Based on those experiences, I wouldn’t hesitate to book a guided hike if I returned.

Final Thoughts on Hiking in Brasov

Hiking in Brasov at Seven Ladders Canyon

Brasov is one of the best outdoor destinations in Romania. Within minutes of the city center, you can be climbing Mount Tampa. Within an hour or so, you can reach some of the country’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

What I enjoyed most was the variety. You can tackle a quick morning hike before lunch just to sweat out the food or drinks from the night before, spend a day exploring alpine terrain, or plan a multi-day adventure in the surrounding national parks if you’re a legit outdoorsperson.

Between Mount Tampa, Poiana Brasov, Sinaia, Busteni, and Piatra Craiului National Park, there’s so many doable hiking opportunities in and around Brasov.
