Right when you step into Brasov’s Old Town, you’ll notice the giant white “Brasov” sign perched atop Mount Tampa above the city. Resembling the Hollywood sign, it might look a little cheesy, but it’s honestly a neat little feature and adds to the postcard mountain backdrop.
The Brasov sign has become one of the city’s defining landmarks, and getting up there doesn’t require much effort beyond a decent uphill walk. One of my favorite things about this hike is that you can leave directly from the historic center and be on the mountain trail within literal seconds.
If you’re looking for an easy hike in Brasov that doesn’t require planning an entire day around it, trekking Mount Tampa to the Brasov sign is a good place to start. Here’s a bit more about my experience doing so, but first, here’s the story behind it.
The History of Brasov’s Hollywood Sign
The sign today looks exactly like what you think it does: Brasov’s version of the Hollywood sign. But before the current version existed, the mountain displayed something a lot less timeless and a lot more harrowing.
In 1950, trees were planted to spell out “Stalin,” reflecting the period when Brasov itself had been renamed Orașul Stalin, or “Stalin City,” during communist rule. But that didn’t last forever. A decade later, both the city name and the sign returned to it’s proper title of Brasov.
Oddly enough, it actually isn’t Romania’s only mountaintop city sign that looks like a mirror image of the Hollywood sign. Nearby Rasnov has one too, although visitors usually aren’t able to hike up to it.
Starting the Hike Up Mount Tampa
One reason the Mount Tampa hike is so popular is convenience. The main access points to the Brasov sign begin along the promenade inside Parc sub Tampa, which runs beneath the mountain.
Most people head up from either:
- The trail behind Weavers’ Bastion
- The trail behind Ropers’ Bastion
Both routes eventually bring you toward the summit area and the Brasov sign.
There are additional approaches from the opposite side of the mountain, but unless you’re staying outside the city center, there’s not much reason to use them.
How Difficult Is the Mount Tampa Hike?
This isn’t a difficult hike, but it’s enough of a climb that you’ll earn the views. Plan for around two hours total if you’re going up and back down, with another 15 to 30 minutes taking pictures and a brief rest at the top. I saw everything from serious runners to families and older visitors making their way up.
The trail gains roughly 1,000 feet in elevation and stays consistently uphill for most of the ascent. You won’t need special gear or experience, though if you’re not especially active, expect a workout.
Definitely bring good trekking shoes. It might not be super steep or dangerous, but it is a legit uphill hike on a dirt path, so it would be annoying to do with poor shoes.
Once You Reach the Top
The summit area gives you broad views across Brasov’s rooftops with the surrounding hills stretching out behind the city.
Something worth knowing ahead of time though: don’t expect those classic photos standing with the sign directly behind you. The letters sit above a drop-off, and there isn’t an angle where you can frame yourself in front of them. Truthfully, the views from Turnul Alb (“White Tower”) on the other side of old town are more Instagram-worthy. That trek is just five minutes or so.
Still, you can see miles and miles of the distant countryside from the Brasov sign.
Tips Before You Hike to the Brasov Sign
A few final things I’d know beforehand:
- Bring water: You won’t find vendors once you start climbing and you’ll be hiking for close to two hours round trip.
- Hike in mornings or evenings to avoid congestion: This is one of the more popular things to do in Brasov, especially in summer. Earlier and later hours feel noticeably quieter, and cooler in the peak of summer.
- Wear shoes with some grip: As mentioned, hiking shoes will help, as the dirt trail can feel slippery in spots.
- Prioritize other viewpoints for the best pictures: Mount Tampa is excellent, but I actually liked the perspectives from Black Tower and White Tower even more.
Other Great Hikes Around Brasov
Mount Tampa is probably the easiest hike to fit into a Brasov itinerary, but it’s far from the only one.
Seven Ladders Canyon makes for a really enjoyable half-day outing with a series of waterfalls and narrow canyon passages. It’s also easy to reach from Brasov via a short 20-minute Uber.
Poiana Brasov is another solid option as a homebase if you want more mountain access. In summer it becomes a base for hiking and biking, and in winter it turns into one of Romania’s better ski areas.
If you’re willing to go a little farther, the town of Sinaia has some excellent mountain hikes that get overshadowed by Peles Castle. It’s an easy 45-minute train ride and works perfect well as a day trip from Brasov.
In-Summary
The hike to Brasov’s Hollywood sign isn’t necessarily a must-do, but I’d say it is for those who like to hike and want to get a workout in before a day of exploring a city. Despite the views being maybe a 7/10 rather than a 10/10, it’s still a memorable activity and really convenient as long as you’re staying in old town. You don’t need transportation, the trail starts basically in town, and within a couple hours you get some of the best elevated views in Brasov.
